Generic Port instruction (GPI).

Since April 01, 2019, the Generic Port Instruction is mandatory on all construction sites. The certification was created to promote safe behavior on the construction site. What is it, what variants are there and how can you obtain a GPI certificate? Read it here.

What is generic port instruction?

The Generic Port Instruction (GPI) is a safety instruction that is mandatory for anyone seeking access to a construction site or factory site in the Netherlands.

The GPI is designed to ensure safety on industrial sites and factory premises and prevent accidents and incidents. The GPI contains important safety information and rules applicable to the sites in question, such as hazards, safety measures, emergency procedures and rules of conduct.

Anyone wishing to access the site must take the GPI training and obtain a GPI certificate. This applies not only to the subcontractor’s employees, but also, for example, to drivers and visitors who want to enter the site. In this way, site safety is ensured and the risk of incidents and accidents is reduced.

GPI does not replace the SCC

GPI focuses specifically on safety rules and procedures applicable to the sites in question, while SCC focuses on general safety rules and procedures applicable to high-risk environments. Both remain necessary for working on construction sites.

What Generic Port Instruction certificates are there?

There are several Generic Port Instruction (GPI) certificates that can be obtained, depending on the nature of the work and the specific risks at the industrial site or factory site in question. The most common GPI certifications for construction and installation engineering are:

GPI Infra

This variant of the GPI is intended for contractors and subcontractors working in the infrastructure sector, such as the construction of roads, bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure projects.

GPI B&U

This variant of the GPI is specifically designed for contractors and subcontractors working in the construction and utility industry, such as the construction of homes, offices, schools, hospitals and other utility buildings.

GPI Installation

This variant of the GPI is designed for contractors and subcontractors working in the installation sector, such as the installation of electrical systems, air conditioning and ventilation systems, security systems and other installation engineering projects.

Each variant of the GPI contains specific safety information and rules applicable to the particular industry. By taking the appropriate GPI variant and obtaining the corresponding certificate, contractors and subcontractors gain the necessary knowledge and skills to work safely within their industry and on the sites in question. Other GPI certificates are those for Petrochemicals and for Ports.

How long is a GPI certificate valid?

The validity period of a GPI certificate is 1 year. This keeps you abreast of the latest updates to safety rules and procedures. Be sure to renew your certificate on time so that you maintain access to the construction site.

How do you obtain a gpi certificate?

You can easily obtain a GPI certificate online, this is done through your browser, so there is no need to install an additional program. You can also choose from different languages for the training. It consists of an introductory video, practice questions and test questions. You have 30 minutes for taking the test. Once the GPI is passed, you will receive the certificate immediately.

The cost to obtain a certificate is €8.75, You will then receive a login code that allows you to take the test 3 times. Should you then fail you will have to buy a new code.
